Herb Gardening – Greek Style

Being a proud mix of Greek-Italian descent, I would say cooking was taught at an early age. Italian Mother and Greek Father who both cooked equally was a fun daily experience. I don’t remember a time of not cooking with my my parents. Baking, meh… Cooking, YES!

So, apart from the actually edible food ingredients, the Herbs used very distinct to each dish. You would rarely substitute a herb for another. For instance is Greek Spanakopita even legit if it doesn’t have dill?? NO! Now, there are people who can’t eat dill…so maybe we have to be a bot more accommodating.

I for instance have the gene, that cannot tolerate cilantro/dania/coriander leaf. NO THANKS! And, no, it does not taste like soap…it’s worse, far worse….

For many, an herb garden may be a good option. If, you have limited space or you don’t have a lot of time to devote to gardening, the supermarkets are good enough. If, you’re unable, for physical reasons, to spend a lot of time on your hands and knees or your garden conditions are less than ideal such as poor soil, bad drainage, too much shade or sun (this would require the use of a container garden). So, to Fresh Market we go!

In Greek cuisine, we have some favorite herbs – 

The most popular and would be sacrilegious if you don’t have any in the pantry: Oregano!

Followed by Basil, Dill, Mint, Sage, Thyme, Rosemary, Parsley, Bay Leaves, Fennell and Mahleb. Of course with certain recipes, we add cinnamon, all spice or other flavorful spices.

I am fortunate that there are a few good Greek Restaurants in Fort Lauderdale. In Fort Lauderdale alone I can frequent – Greek Isles, Ethos, Thasos, or the Greek Pastries store for my necessities.
